Managing Maternity Risk

BCBS Special Beginnings Maternity Program

Our Special Beginnings® maternity program provides expectant members support and education, risk factor identification and ongoing communication/monitoring from experienced program staff. The program’s goal is to help the mother throughout her pregnancy and give the baby a healthy start.

Program participation helps enable early identification of high-risk pregnancies and allows case managers to intervene before costly admissions for complications such as threatened pre-term labor.

Cost savings was nearly 50 percent higher for high-risk expectant members who participated in Special Beginnings compared to those in case management alone.
